The offer may seem appealing given the website’s bustling appearance and the promotional claims of anonymity, encryption, OpenVPN, hassle-free installation, and cross-platform support. However, attempting to utilize their free, subscription-free service is likely to result in disappointment, as it may not deliver the promised functionality.
Features
Faceless.me is a VPN provider with a presence in the industry spanning over five years, though its origins remain undisclosed.
I opted for a Faceless.me free account. The VPN client is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux-based devices, as well as iOS and Android platforms.
While the desktop software has a visually appealing design, its functionality falls short. I encountered persistent issues with establishing a connection. Despite consulting troubleshooting guides, verifying firewall settings, running the program with administrative privileges, reinstalling the software, and attempting to use it on multiple computers, I was unable to achieve a successful connection.
I also reached out to their support team through their ticketing system:
Given the possibility that the free service might be limited due to server congestion during peak times, I revisited Faceless.me over the past three weeks in an attempt to resolve the connectivity issue, but to no avail.
Moreover, I did not receive a response from their support team.
The provider’s blog has not been updated since 2014, and their Twitter page, created in November 2013, has not been updated since January 2014. Additional information from the WhoIs database provided little insight beyond the website registration expiration date of July 2018.
A clear indication of discontinuation is the Android app, which has not been updated since its initial release in March 2013. The Windows desktop application also carries a copyright date of 2011.
Pricing
The primary advantage of Faceless.me is its free plan, which does not require a subscription. Users can download the program, install it, and connect to one of two available server locations – in the US and the Netherlands. However, the 2GB traffic limit is of little benefit, as the service does not function effectively.
For those interested in a paid plan, pricing starts at $19.95 for three months or $29.95 for six months. The provider accepts payments via PayPal and credit cards.
